A trip is a warning, not an inconvenience

A ground-fault circuit interrupter cuts power when it detects current taking an unsafe path. That can happen because water reached a tool, an appliance has insulation damage, a cord is damaged, a receptacle is wet, or the circuit has a wiring problem. The interruption is doing its job by warning you about a possible shock or fire hazard.

Do not treat a GFCI that keeps tripping as a nuisance to defeat. Never tape the reset button, replace the device with an ordinary receptacle, use a cheater plug, or repeatedly reset it while an appliance is connected. The first goal is to make the area dry and safe. The second is to identify whether the problem follows a device or remains with the circuit.

Important: Water and electricity can be lethal together. Keep clear of a wet receptacle, cord, appliance, or panel and call a qualified electrician when the situation is not plainly safe.

Make the area safe before touching the reset

A single controlled reset may show that a removable load caused the trip, but it does not prove that the appliance is safe. Some circuits feed more than one room or outdoor outlet.

Make a simple list of what is connected to the protected circuit without opening boxes. Include freezers, sump pumps, well equipment, outdoor receptacles, refrigerators, washing machines, bathroom devices, and extension cords. A service professional can isolate branches and test insulation, grounding, and device condition. Do not borrow a breaker, change wire size, or move a circuit connection yourself.

Test the protection, not just the power

CPSC guidance describes a monthly GFCI test with a lamp or night-light: the TEST button should trip the device and turn the light off, and RESET should restore power. If the light stays on when TEST is pressed, the reset does not restore power, or the device behaves differently from its instructions, stop relying on it and arrange qualified replacement or repair.

A receptacle that supplies power can still have a protection problem. Do not assume that a green indicator, a working appliance, or a successful reset proves the sensing function works. Keep a monthly test note and record the room, device, and result. Test only from a dry, safe position and follow the manufacturer's instructions for a breaker-type GFCI.

An electrician can locate upstream and downstream devices, test for leakage and wiring errors, inspect outdoor covers and boxes, verify grounding, and replace a failed GFCI with the correct listed device. Local rules control placement and circuit requirements. A reset that brings back power is not permission to ignore repeated trips or to keep a marginal receptacle in service.

Prevent repeat trips without defeating protection

Keep outdoor and damp-area receptacles protected by the correct covers, repair plumbing leaks, keep cords and power strips out of water, and use appliances according to their instructions. Inspect cords before use and retire damaged equipment. Do not use extension cords as permanent wiring or overload a circuit with heaters, pumps, tools, or high-wattage appliances.

Test GFCIs monthly and note recurring weather or equipment patterns. If a protected circuit serves a pump or outdoor equipment, ask the electrician about weatherproof enclosures, motor starting current, dedicated circuits, and the correct device for the load. The goal is reliable protection and a sound circuit, not a device that never trips because it has been bypassed.
