The fire is out, but the well system looks changed

Imagine a household returning after a wildfire to find a scorched well cap, melted irrigation tubing, and no water pressure. The indoor water later returns but smells smoky. This is an illustrative scenario. Fire, heat, power loss, damaged plastic, firefighting water, debris, fuel releases, and damaged septic components can create microbial, chemical, electrical, and mechanical risks.

Do not drink or cook with the water until the local health department and qualified well professionals provide a testing and return-to-use plan. CDC advises at minimum bacterial testing after relevant wildfire impacts and consideration of volatile and semivolatile organic compounds when components or surrounding areas have substantial fire damage. Lack of odor does not prove the water is unaffected.

Important: Keep power off around burned, wet, or exposed well wiring. A licensed electrician or well contractor should determine when equipment is safe to energize.

Assess from a safe distance

Do not touch the cap, casing, wires, pressure equipment, burned plastic, ash, or debris until hazards are cleared. Photograph conditions from a safe location. Note whether the home lost power, the well lost pressure, faucets sputter, water changed color or odor, or fire reached the wellhead, storage tanks, treatment equipment, plumbing, or septic area.

Look for nearby fuel tanks, chemical storage, vehicles, transformers, burned buildings, firefighting foam use, and spills without entering restricted areas. Report suspected releases to emergency or environmental authorities. A standard bacteria test cannot evaluate petroleum or fire-related chemicals.

Pressure loss changes the plan

Do not repeatedly prime, reset, or run a pump that may be damaged or drawing from a compromised system.

A well contractor can inspect the casing, cap, pitless adapter, pump, drop pipe, pressure tank, service line, and electrical components. If the well is opened or repaired, the health department may direct disinfection, flushing, and timed bacteriological samples. Do not invent a chlorine dose; construction and water volume determine the procedure.

Important: Generators must operate outdoors, away from doors, windows, and vents, and be connected only by qualified guidance.

Build a wildfire-specific test panel

Use a certified laboratory and local health-department advice. Bacterial indicators are a minimum starting point in CDC wildfire guidance. When synthetic well or plumbing components were heated, damage is extensive, or the surrounding fire was severe, discuss VOCs, SVOCs, and other local contaminants of concern. Heavy metals may also be relevant.

Tell the laboratory what burned, which components are plastic or rubber, whether pressure was lost, what odors occurred, and whether fuel or chemicals were nearby. Broad analytical methods may be considered, but the laboratory and agency should choose them. A generic real-estate well panel may miss wildfire-specific compounds.

Flushing requires an environmental plan

Do not flush suspected chemical contamination through the home without guidance. That can draw contaminants into water heaters, treatment tanks, appliances, and plumbing. Do not discharge contaminated or highly chlorinated water to a septic system, storm drain, stream, or burned soil without agency direction.

The contractor and environmental authority should identify where water can go, how workers are protected, and whether treatment media or plumbing must be removed. Carbon, softener resin, reverse-osmosis membranes, and filters exposed to contaminated water or heat may require replacement and special handling. Odor disappearing during flushing does not prove chemical safety.

Important: If fuel or solvent odor appears, stop using the water and contact health and environmental authorities promptly.

Check the septic system too

Wildfire can melt risers, lids, cleanouts, vents, inspection ports, and piping. Firefighting vehicles or cleanup equipment can compact a drainfield or crack tanks. CDC recommends limiting or discontinuing water use when the septic system is damaged and keeping people and pets away until inspection.

A septic professional should check access security, tank and piping condition, pumps, alarms, and the field. Do not drive repair equipment across the system. If both well and septic are damaged, coordinate the repairs so sewage hazards and flushing water do not threaten the well.

Keep alternate safe water available until approval. Record photographs, contractor findings, replaced materials, disinfection details, laboratory methods, results, and sample points. Retest if odor, color, pressure, or taste changes, or if later cleanup reveals a chemical release. Insurance documentation should not replace health precautions.

Important: Clear, odorless water can still contain bacteria or chemicals. Testing and inspection close the decision.
