Answer first: buy a matched assembly, not a nominal length
When a drawer slide has been professionally identified as unsuitable or failed, choose replacement hardware using the complete runner code, mounting arrangement, actual drawer geometry, locking devices and applicable load specification. A listing saying “21-inch soft close” does not establish compatibility. Have the cabinet professional or manufacturer confirm the complete selected assembly before ordering. If the failure has not been established, start with diagnosis rather than buying parts to experiment.
This guide owns replacement selection, not the repeated last-inch closure diagnosis addressed by the drawer-closure guide. The exact technical examples are Blum TANDEM 563F and 563H sheets dated May 2016 and identified MOVENTO variants in the current technical brochure. Those families have differences in geometry, mounting and components. Do not force a drawer, remove an unsupported heavy drawer or modify the cabinet to make incompatible parts fit.
Record the full code and the cabinet construction
Use existing parts records, safe visible markings or the professional’s inspection to identify both runners, their full suffixes and the right and left locking devices. Record whether the system is side-mounted, center-mounted or concealed underneath, and whether the cabinet is face-frame or frameless. Similar orange controls or one manufacturer’s name do not establish that different concealed systems accept the same replacement. Ask the supplier to resolve an incomplete code before selecting a supposed equivalent.
Have the cabinet professional identify the actual cabinet and drawer material, condition and mounting support. Blum’s technical guidance discusses wood, melamine or MDF applications and says attachment methods must suit the material. Existing screws are not proof that the backing or installation is adequate. Do not attach replacement hardware to unverified backing, change screw locations by guesswork or assume a frame obstruction can be removed without affecting the cabinet.
Measure the opening and actual drawer, not nominal lumber
Ask the professional to obtain the clear opening width, height and inside depth, drawer length, actual side thickness, outside and inside drawer widths, bottom recess and relevant rear geometry. Keep each dimension labeled and in consistent units. Drawer length is not necessarily the physical runner length printed in a catalogue table. A frame projection or rear attachment range can affect usable depth even when the drawer front’s width looks correct.
The TANDEM sheets expressly call for actual side-thickness measurements when calculating outside width. Do not treat nominal three-quarter-inch or five-eighths-inch material as an exact physical measurement. For the identified examples, inside width equals opening width minus the model-specific deduction, and outside width adds twice the actual side thickness. These formulas are compatibility evidence for the specified systems, not permission to rebuild or cut a drawer from a generic article.
Compare the two identified TANDEM examples
The shared values do not make F and H interchangeable. Their inside-width and maximum-side-thickness requirements differ, and the exact code, length, installation and attachments still need review. Both six-page sheets contain model-specific depth and mounting details and are subject to technical change. Have the supplier confirm the applicable replacement rather than treating a currently hosted older sheet as automatic approval for every modern component.
| Specified item | TANDEM 563F sheet | TANDEM 563H sheet |
|---|---|---|
| Inside drawer width | Opening width minus 49 mm | Opening width minus 42 mm |
| Maximum drawer-side thickness | 19 mm | 16 mm |
| Outside drawer width | Inside width plus twice actual side thickness | Inside width plus twice actual side thickness |
| Bottom recess in these sheets | 13 mm | 13 mm |
| Bottom clearance in these sheets | 14 mm | 14 mm |
| Minimum top clearance in these sheets | 6 mm | 6 mm |
Check face-frame attachments and inset details separately
For a frame cabinet, ask whether the selected variant accepts a rear bracket or socket, requires an appropriate blocked-out side, or has another documented mounting arrangement. The 563H/563. sheet explicitly excludes rear brackets and sockets for its 563. series variants. In the current MOVENTO brochure, 763H and 763. or 769. arrangements also differ. A bracket that physically reaches the back is not necessarily an accepted attachment for the chosen runner and closure technology.
Record whether the drawer front is inset or overlay and which actual locking device or motion system is installed. The TANDEM F and H inset setback formulas differ and also depend on whether T51.1901.PS is used. Do not copy an inset dimension from another system. Request a model-matched professional comparison, including actual sub-front and drawer-front thickness, instead of turning a shared nominal length into an assumption about the front position.
Do not transfer TANDEM clearances into MOVENTO
The selected current MOVENTO technical pages show different vertical clearances from the TANDEM examples: the covered MOVENTO geometry uses a 16-mm bottom clearance and 7-mm minimum top clearance, compared with 14 mm and 6 mm in the TANDEM sheets above. They also describe their own notch and locking-device requirements. The useful purchasing action is asking the professional to compare the full geometry of the exact runner, not changing the drawer until one dimension matches.
Blum’s required two-page MOVENTO installer guide depicts TIP-ON BLUMOTION synchronization and associated front-gap considerations. It should not be presented as the installation sequence for every soft-close drawer. Ask whether the actual arrangement includes mechanical push-to-open, standard soft-close, electrical opening assistance or another documented option. This article gives no generic release, reset, synchronization-rod removal, drilling or adjustment sequence. Parts and procedure applicability must remain tied to the actual system.
Treat rated load as an assembly and installation question
Ask the supplier to state the applicable load specification for the selected runner, locking devices, attachments and installation, including what the stated rating represents. Blum’s MOVENTO programme labels its table as static ratings under its stated testing standard. That is not a universal safe loaded weight for every drawer. The selected technical brochure also identifies a narrow locking-device option with a distinct dynamic limit, so an accessory choice can matter even within one family.
Do not mix static and dynamic numbers or infer capacity from a “heavy duty” marketing description. Have the professional consider the actual drawer and anticipated contents under the manufacturer’s applicable specification. The TANDEM mounting sheets identify prescribed fixing locations associated with specified capacity; a few existing elongated-hole screws do not establish completed mounting. This guide does not select fasteners or certify load-bearing backing. Have the accepted assembly and installation verified before returning the drawer to use.
Measurements, parts and quote checklist
Collect the stamped full runner code and suffix, left and right parts, cabinet type and material, actual opening and drawer dimensions, side thickness, bottom recess, rear notch and hook geometry, frame obstructions and inside depth. Include locking-device identities, rear attachment, inset or overlay front and actual motion technology. Have a professional obtain information that requires safe supported removal; do not pull a heavy loaded drawer out alone to complete the checklist.
Ask the quotation to identify a complete matched replacement set, component compatibility, supported handling, condition or backing correction where justified, installation and final verification. Obtain actual charges and exclusions rather than assuming runners are the only needed parts. Ask whether manufacturer confirmation is required for an older or discontinued identity and what evidence supports any proposed substitute. Keep material, finish and appearance requirements in the order as well, without prioritizing a cosmetic match over safe functional compatibility.
Verify the supported replacement without a stress experiment
After installation, request the actual parts used, applicable manufacturer documentation, relevant mounting confirmation and normal-operation findings from the qualified provider. Ask what was corrected and which limits apply to the final assembly. Do not load the drawer beyond the accepted specification or repeatedly slam it to demonstrate strength. A smooth empty drawer is useful but not by itself proof of every geometry, attachment and capacity requirement.
Keep the replacement file with the cabinet records so another provider can identify the assembly without guessing from a photograph. If the proposed parts were rejected as incompatible, retain the reason. A dimensional mismatch or unsupported mounting option is a meaningful selection result, not an invitation to force the hardware. The purchasing decision should resolve the diagnosed replacement need while preserving the cabinet’s actual support and the manufacturer’s limitations.
Illustrative scenario: two runners are both advertised as 21-inch
Imagine an owner finds two concealed soft-close runner listings with the same advertised length. A professional’s measurements show that the drawer-side thickness and inside width fit one specified system but not the other. In this illustrative scenario, the owner also learns that a proposed bracket and locking device are not interchangeable between the assemblies. Matching the listing’s length would have missed the decisive differences.
The owner obtains a complete confirmed parts proposal and supported removal and installation service rather than modifying the drawer or mixing components. The provider retains the actual measurements, code and final findings. The result is a documented compatible selection for that cabinet, not a universal brand endorsement or a promise that every similarly sized drawer uses the same parts. If the original closure symptom was never diagnosed, that remains a separate first step rather than being concealed by an unnecessary replacement.
Frequently asked questions
Are 563F and 563H interchangeable? Their cited width and side-thickness requirements differ; confirm the actual assembly. Is drawer length always runner length? No; use the exact technical table. Can any rear bracket support any concealed runner? No; variants and motion technologies have specific limitations.
Does a static rating equal my safe contents allowance? Do not assume so; obtain the complete applicable assembly specification. Can I use TANDEM clearances for MOVENTO? Not as a universal transfer. Should I force a new locking device into place? No. Who should handle a heavy drawer and verify backing? An appropriately qualified provider using a supported safe plan.
