The alarm is on, but the pump is silent

Imagine a homeowner hearing the septic alarm after two loads of laundry. The alarm light stays on, the pump chamber is out of sight, and someone suggests opening the lid to lift a float by hand. This is an illustrative scenario. A float switch may be tangled, obstructed, worn, incorrectly positioned, or electrically faulty, but a failed pump, tripped circuit, clogged discharge, control-panel fault, or unusually high inflow can produce the same symptom.

Reduce water use immediately and call a qualified septic service provider. Do not open the chamber, touch floats, reach into wastewater, switch a panel to hand mode, or repeatedly reset a breaker. Pump chambers contain sewage, toxic gases, low oxygen, electrical equipment, and fall hazards.

Why a float may not move correctly

Ask whether the system has reserve storage and what essential water use is allowed while waiting. Do not assume a generic number of hours; reserve volume and inflow vary.

A pump that will not stop
