The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says a typical household septic tank is generally pumped every three to five years and inspected every one to three years. That interval changes with tank size, household size, water use, and the amount of solids in the tank.
Reasons to inspect sooner
- The service history is missing
- A garbage disposal adds more solids
- The household recently became larger
- Drains are slow throughout the house
- An effluent filter has not been serviced
- The system uses pumps or other mechanical parts
Use measurements, not guessing
A service professional can measure sludge and scum layers during an inspection. Keep the report and pumping receipt with the home's permanent maintenance records. Those records make the next service interval easier to plan and help during a future property sale.
Important: Routine pumping cannot repair a failed drain field. If wastewater is surfacing outdoors or backing up indoors, reduce water use and contact a qualified professional promptly.
